How Do Horoscopes Work?

Behind every horoscope is a simple method: put your sign in the 1st house and follow the planets around the wheel.

The Solar-House Method

Sun-sign horoscopes treat your sign as the 1st house. For Aries, Taurus becomes the 2nd house (money), Gemini the 3rd (communication), and so on. When Jupiter enters Virgo, an Aries reads it in the 6th house of health and work; a Taurus in the 5th of romance and creativity.

Transits

A transit is a current planet moving through a sign or forming an angle to a point in your chart. Slow planets (Jupiter to Pluto) set yearly themes; the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars set the monthly tone; the Moon changes the daily mood.

Why Horoscopes Differ

  • Astrologers emphasise different planets.
  • Some use whole-sign houses from the rising sign, not the Sun.
  • Daily horoscopes are often written loosely, not from that day's sky.

How Accurate Are Horoscopes?

Sun-sign horoscopes describe one twelfth of humanity at once, so they can only sketch general themes. For more personal accuracy use your rising sign too, or try our personal horoscope based on your full birth date.
